Increase Your Website Conversion Rates

There's a lot of talk about driving traffic to your website. Go Google "internet traffic" and see. It is all about traffic, traffic and traffic. But you can't take traffic to the bank without converting it to sales. Conversion - the rate that visitors take a desired action on your site - is a function of several variables, including the total website experience. There are many ways to get it wrong; here are some ways to get it right.

Get The Grab - If your website doesn't "grab" visitors in the first few seconds, you've lost them. They're gone with the click of the back button. The best way to do this is to visit some of your favorite sites and note what you like and don't like about them. You want your website to be pleasing to the eye, professional looking and easy to understand. There are millions of little gadgets and widgets out there, but you don't want to clutter up your home page with these things because they can distract the visitor from the purpose, which should be stated clearly and simply right from the get go.

Clarify The Action - Believe it or not, it is not uncommon to find ecommerce sites that are not clear on how to grab the goods and get in the checkout line.

It's like going to a supermarket and wanting to buy peanut butter. Where the heck is it and why do I need to stand in line to pay for it? Smart stores have figured this out and have installed self-checkout registers. The first I saw were at Home Depot, and I love them. Online, the process should be that easy or even easier. Make the objective clear and the process easy to follow. Use the 'buy now', 'order here' or 'download now' buttons. Lack of clarity and convenience tells the shopper to go elsewhere.

Speed The Sales - Want to experience ultimate frustration? Get the itch to buy something online and then have that itch not scratched because the site is too slow or the checkout page is sluggish or a link is dead. Key to holding a visitor's attention is making sure each page of your site loads quickly and correctly. If the page loads too slowly, the visitor is gone; moved on; shopping elsewhere. What would expect from the attention span of an amoeba? I'm as guilty as the next guy, but my expectations are high.

Convert your traffic into desired action with grab, clarity and speed. Make the experience as enjoyable as the product.
