Traffic advisor panels are extremely important components of most multifunctional and multipurpose light bars. The panels are extremely useful for two important reasons. Firstly, they are capable of showing mammoth right or left directional arrows to speeding drivers which could help them prepare in advance from a distance to change their directions. Secondly, flashy LEDs are used for the Traffic advisors making them highly visible. The penetration of the long range beams emanating from the LEDs is impressive too and turns out to be useful especially during rainy or foggy conditions. This helps in highway safety especially if there are construction, repair or wreckage clearance sites.
Traffic advisor panels usually come enclosed in aluminum modules which are usually chrome plated to provide added corrosion resistance. Heavy duty actuators are used in some of them to facilitate quick release. It is interesting to note that some of the directional arrows are seen on reflective backgrounds to assist the visibility of the signs. The number of LEDs and their size used for the advisor lights actually varies a bit and this also affects the efficiency of the lights. Longer arrows will obviously be used in bigger advisor panels which come with widths in excess of 60 inches and a height of more than 30 inches.
Generation IV LEDs are used for their super bright, highly directional beams. About 14 – 20 LEDs could be used in sealed modules which are well encapsulated for excellent protection. The amperage draw could vary between 5 to 10 Amperes although LEDs in general are preferred for their energy efficiency. Some Traffic advisor panels come with innovative features like rack built light bar mounting base.
